Steps to follow:
- You will need: two balloons – a deflated and an inflated balloon, a metre ruler/30 cm ruler and two cut up bits of string.
- With a ruler/measuring scale, tie one empty/deflated balloon to the end of one side of the ruler and the other balloon blown up on the other end.
- Predict which balloon is heavier – the deflated or the inflated balloon?
- Balance the scale and see what happens?

Lesson 2
Learning Intention
To plan and conduct a fair test investigation.
Lesson Information
Step to follow:
- Predict which type of chocolate you think will melt first and at what temperature.
- Use the paper clips to clip the foil pie cases to the inside rim of the plastic takeaway tray.
- Collect equal sized pieces of the three different types of chocolate and put a single piece of chocolate into each of the three pie cases.
- Ask for hot water to be poured into your takeaway tray. The level of the hot water must be deep enough to touch the pie cases about halfway up but must not come near or over the top of the pie cases.
- Start your timers as the hot water is poured in.
- Carefully stir each piece of chocolate.
- Record the time when each has completely melted and note your results.

Steps to follow:
- Pour an equal amount of three or four different liquids on a plate – Honey, Corn syrup, Dishwashing Liquid and Oil.
- Which liquid will flow down first? Write your prediction in the Predict Observe and Explain template.
- Lift the plate up and observe which liquid wins the race.
Write your observation and explanation in the template.
