To use our investigation skills to explore a chemical reaction and link this to weather.
Lesson Information
Steps to follow:
- You will need – water, baby oil (or other oil), white paint, glitter (optional) and Alka Seltzer tablets.
- Fill your jar ¾ of the way full of oil.
- Mix some white paint into ½ a cup of water.
- Pour the white mixture into the jar of oil.
- Add some glitter (optional)
- Add one Alka Seltzer tablet and watch what happens.
Add a second Alka Seltzer tablet and watch again.

To investigate how rain clouds are formed.
Lesson Information
Steps to follow:
- Fill a clear container/jar with water.
- Spray a thick layer of shaving foam on top.
- Add blue drops of food colouring.
- See what happens!

To investigate the movement of tornadoes.
Lesson Information
Steps to follow:
- Fill a 500ml plastic bottle with cold water.
- Add 2-3 drops of dishwasing liquid.
- Add 1 teaspoon of glitter.
- Add a few drops of food colouring (optional).
- Twist the cap tightly on the bottle.
- Spin the bottle as fast as you can.
