Lesson 5
Learning Intention
To draw a picture to make a personal response to the music.
Lesson Information
Close your eyes and listen to the following piece of music: Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland (written in 1942)
- Make a list of all of the instruments that you can hear and list which family of the orchestra they belong to (Woodwind/brass/string/percussion)
- Now listen again and draw a picture to show either how you are feeling (the mood of the music) or what you are thinking about when you listen to the music.
- Now listen to: Pachabel Canon in D (written in 1680)
Now listen again and repeat the steps above.

Explain to a member of your family the picture that you drew and why.
Lesson 4
Learning Intention
To learn about the percussion family of the orchestra.
Lesson Information
- Make a list of all of the percussion instruments that you can think of.
- Then watch the instructional video and see if you can see and hear some more percussion instruments.
- Now, log on to the home learning portal and click on ABC Kids music.
- Enter ‘percussion instruments’ into the search engine.
- Watch some of the videos about the percussion family.

- Research the names of all of the instruments in the brass family using the website classicsforkids.com. In the Play section click on instruments of the orchestra and then you will be able to hear the sounds of different brass instruments.
- Write the names of all the brass instruments you have found.
- How are brass and woodwind instruments different?
- How are brass and woodwind instruments similar?
